On Tuesday Oct. 3, the Freshman and Sophomore Cross Country Team raced a distance of 2.5 miles at Desert Breeze Park. The team’s youngest members were so excited for their largest race of the season and had tons of support from the upperclassmen. Coach Martinez says, “The young freshman girls continue to improve each race and the boys are very confident and have continued to prove they can compete with anyone.”
Freshman Calvin Rivera ran an outstanding time of 13:39, taking first and breaking the school’s record. Rivera also set a new record for the meets course. The Freshman boys ended up taking first overall and the freshman girls placed second overall. Freshman Brooke Giles from the girls team says, “Overall the race felt good, it definitely wasn’t the easiest course, running up those hills was hard.”
The freshman had loads of fun during this meet and felt excited for this race since it’s their first year running cross country. The race was full of excitement from the underclassmen and upperclassmen. Senior Madeline Ream of the girls varsity team says, “They absolutely killed it. Loved that the whole team supported one another no matter who was racing and kept that energy throughout the whole afternoon.”
Overall, the whole afternoon was filled with supportive teammates and excited underclassmen. The seniors and coaches were proud to see how well the underclassmen raced and how supportive the rest of the team was.
