Last week, on Monday, September 8th through Friday, September 12th, Centennial High School’s Student Council hosted a “Mental Health Spirit Week” to raise awareness about mental health.
Mental Health is all about how we handle our emotions, thoughts, and relationships. It affects how we feel, act, and deal with life, so people can spread awareness to help others not feel judged when they’re struggling, so they can know it’s okay to get help. So everyone understands things like anxiety and depression better, and so life feels easier, healthier, and people don’t feel alone.
Some of the spirit days included: Dark red on Monday for stress awareness day, Tuesday yellow to be a light to others, Wednesday miss-match clothes for ADHD awareness day, Thursday purple and blue for National Suicide awareness day, and Friday black or camo for Social Anxiety awareness day.
I spoke to Mr. Hainesworth, a Counselor at Centennial High School and asked him what his opinion was about Mental Health Spirit Week.
“ I think its a great idea because it provides awareness and it also shows what mental health is because there are kids who don’t even know what it is, it also shows that they are seen, and heard” and lastly Mr. Hainesworth said, “It shows their feelings are important. It’s okay to not be okay”.
This really helped the students at Centennial High School, since it caught their attention and it became a topic of conversation for many of them, which also is a main idea about this week, so students and teachers are aware of this very important and meaningful week for a lot of people.
