Following a 45-6 loss last week against Arbor View, the Centennial Bulldogs went into their game against the Canyon Springs Pioneers looking for a win, and they did not disappoint, winning 37-19. Friday’s game represents Centennial’s fifth win in a row on the road, a streak that started last season. It was also the Bulldogs’ largest margin of victory this season.
While Centennial’s first drive looked bleak after two runs were stopped and a holding penalty, a third-and-16 pass to Junior wide receiver Jayden Thomas gave the Bulldogs a much-needed, third-down conversion. That play set up a 38-yard rushing touchdown by Senior, Brogan Church. The extra point was blocked.
After a fumble recovery, Centennial found themselves with the ball at Canyon Springs’ 38-yard line. After Senior, wide receiver Ethan Markos brought in a 34-yard pass, Junior running back Kolten Silbernagel found his way to the endzone for a 4-yard rushing touchdown.
When asked what led to this early success, Head Coach DJ Campbell mentioned that setting the tone and scoring early gave a good morale boost and motivation that fed off each other. Junior quarterback Oliver Bergstrom echoed that sentiment, adding, “Our whole team not being selfish and playing as a team helped us.” He also credited the defense for allowing Centennial numerous opportunities offensively.
Centennial scored three touchdowns on their first five drives, and had a 29-yard field goal with 2:15 left in the first half. Canyon Springs only scored one touchdown on their first six offensive possessions. The Pioneers also returned an interception for a touchdown. The score at halftime was 24-13 in favor of the Bulldogs.
While filled with scoring, it was also a good game for Centennial’s defense. They had a fumble recovery and two interceptions, along with several third and fourth-down stops. Both interceptions were made by Junior free safety Maxwell Miles.
Centennial (3-2) now heads into a new week before going to Shadow Ridge (4-1) on October 4.
