The Centennial men’s soccer program put together a wonderful night on Tuesday, September 30, at Somerset Sky Pointe, whose record is 0-14-2. The JV team had an amazing 6-1 victory. The game started in the favor of the Somerset Screamin’ Eagles, with them scoring in under 2 minutes. The first half went back and forth until the 20th minute when Centennial scored two quick goals. The score remained 2-1 for the remainder of the half.
The second half was dominated by Centennial, scoring four goals. Most of the half was spent on Centennial’s offensive end of the field, with Sky Pointe rarely getting any pressure. Coach Jordan Murrell said that the team wasn’t expecting the Screamin’ Eagles to come out as fast as they did, and it was a good wake up call, for which they were able to score six unanswered goals.
The varsity game followed, maintaining the tone that the JV team set. Senior forward Kobe Okiyama scored in the fifth minute, followed by senior midfielder Nate Robles in the 13th minute. Centennial scored twice more before Sky Pointe responded with a goal at the 32nd minute. Five minutes later, Junior Ian McDonald capitalized on the opportunity, and just before half, sophomore Austin Cirimele made the score 6-1.
This momentum was neutralized by the Screamin’ Eagles, as they had many opportunities to get offensive pressure in the second half and capitalized on two. For the last 10 minutes of the second half, however, Centennial was back to their first half form, and seldom left the offensive side of the field, with senior forward Gavin Oleary scoring in the 37th minute. The final score was 8-3, with the Bulldogs scoring the most goals in a game this season.
Coach Murrell said, “The boys just keep working hard, they show up to training, work on our philosophies, and they want to do well for our school, they want to do well for themselves, and they want to show out and perform.” This, they certainly did. The Bulldogs’ (8-5-2) next game is Monday, October 6 at Cimarron-Memorial High School (6-5).
