The past month has been an absolute nightmare for the Petito family. On Sept. 11th, 2021, 22-year-old, Gabby Petito, was reported missing by her m0ther after traveling across the country with her fiance, Brian Laundrie.
Petito’s disappearance gained notoriety nationwide thanks to the power of TikTok.
At the time of her disappearance, Gabby and her fiance were traveling across the country in a van trip. The couple’s whereabouts became the focus of public attention due to the amount of audio and video documentation and information about their journeys, including their own travel posts, police body video footage of a domestic dispute between the couple, and 9⁠-⁠1⁠-⁠1 emergency dispatch call recordings.
“I think it’s finance! There’s too much evidence surrounding it and it’s so obvious it is him,” sophomore, Emma Anderson said.
Shortly after her disappearance, Laundrie became a person of interest in the case. Because of that, he refused to talk to the police, let alone the FBI.
Two days later on Sept. 17, Laundrie was reported by his parents to be a missing person after they allegedly did not hear from him since Sept. 14.
On Sept. 19, 2021, human remains were found near Petito’s last known whereabouts at the Spread Creek Dispersed Camping Area of Bridger–Teton National Forest in Grand Teton National Park not far from where the van was previously observed, the remains matched Petito’s description and her identity was confirmed. An autopsy report determined that the manner of death was a homicide.
“It’s heartbreaking that she passed away,” sophomore, Kylee Remmel said.
As of Sept. 30, 2021, Brian Laundrie has still not been found and has been MIA for almost 2 weeks.
