The worldwide-known musical, Mamma Mia, first premiered in 1999. It went on to become one of the most popular Broadway musicals in the Great White Way’s 15-year run. The musical became so popular that it was turned into the Mamma Mia 2008 film, starring Amanda Seyfried and Meryl Streep. Mamma Mia is still on tour today. The musical has been nominated for five Tony awards and a Grammy.
Mamma Mia is the 2023-2024 school year’s musical for the theater and theater tech department. The popular performance will hit Centennial High School’s stage soon! The show will run from February 22 to February 23 from 6:00-8:30 pm. Students are preparing for opening night every weekday after school from 1:15 to 4:30 pm.
When asked about why Mamma Mia was this year’s choice, Mr. Clay Czlapinski and Mr. Brett Puppilo, theater and theater tech directors stated, “Because it is a musical theater classic and has been circulating throughout CCSD for years. We wanted to dip our toes into this popular act.”
Czlapinski is the theater’s new theater tech director, and has high hopes for his students in the staging for this musical. “How large and intense building a two-story set is, these techs should be proud to have built such a sturdy and safe building,” states Czlapinski.
Opening night is approaching quickly, and Puppilo said, “The expectation for this musical is we are hoping for a big outcome from the audience once the show premieres and from the performers. We hope to open up opportunities for all these new faces that star in our production this year.”
